It is with great sadness that we received the news that our friend and colleague, David White, passed away last night, aged 63, after a long battle with cancer. David was well known throughout the timber trade over many years before joining us in 2017, involved with a number of trade groups and committees in particular on timber preservation and highways projects. Always ready with a smile and a joke, and always keen to assist and advise wherever possible, David will be greatly missed by us all at A&J Scott.  David was always a very strong family man and we send our sincere condolences to David’s wife, Laura, their children and all the family.   

A&J Scott are proud to support 18 year old speedway rider William Richardson in the 2023 season, his first riding for Mildenhall Fen Tigers. This is a great comeback for William after he sustained a season-ending broken leg in April last year, following a coming together in his first ever competitive race in the GB Under-21 semi-final.

Saturday saw William record a win at Berwick Bandits along with his teammates, well done lads!

Pleased to get the first 2 of 5 new Still UK electric RX60 forklifts into action, delivered by Forklift Solutions. These 2 beauties lifting 3.5 tonnes will soon be joined by their 5 tonne siblings. The only thing our growing electric fleet won’t produce is emissions!

The prestigious Ward Hadaway North East Fastest 50 Awards, in association with The Journal, celebrate growth, innovation and the commercial achievements of North East businesses.

Based on financial data filed with Companies House, the list ranks the fifty best performing privately-owned companies which have consistently increased turnover over the past three financial years, whilst remaining profitable. A&J Scott was included again in 2022 after a decade in which the family-owned company has increased the size of its main site by 20 acres and invested over £25 million in new capital equipment.

One of the UK’s leading independent sawmillers has appointed a new Forestry Director as it plans for further growth in the coming years. A&J Scott Ltd has announced the appointment of Tom Coates at its site in Northumberland.

Tom, a chartered forester and member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, joins the company from Egger, where he has spent 12 years since graduating with 1^st class honours in Forestry at the University of Cumbria. He will take responsibility for the company’s timber buying and harvesting operations as demand from customers across the country continues to increase.

This follows a decade in which the family-owned company has increased the size of its main site by 20 acres and invested over £25 million in new capital equipment, including a major upgrade to the main sawmill, construction of a new fully automated bandmill, installation of a new log sorting and grading line and a state of the art processing and handling line for re-saw operations.

The company is now well positioned for sustained growth in its main markets for fencing products, railway sleepers and other outdoor timbers in the years ahead, building on its record of delivering quality sawn timber products and high standards of customer service to its loyal base of customers across the UK. The company has also extended its product offer, adding NHSS4 highways standard fencing to its existing range.  

Tom said, “I’m delighted to be joining A&J Scott. I’ve come to know the company over recent years and have been impressed with the growth and development of the business. With the plans already in place and further opportunities ahead, this is an exciting time for me to develop further alongside the company”.

Congratulations to the team from A&J Scott who took on the Cancer Research UK golf challenge! 

The original team of 4 was reduced to 2 ahead of the event by injury and illness. The remaining pair, Lee Straughan and Keith Bell, took on 72 holes of Golf (4 Rounds), teeing off at 5am just before first light, and finished at 7pm, 2 hours ahead of the target finish time!

All in all, just under 14hrs hours of golf and 24 miles covered at Alnmouth Golf Club.
